Deer-Vehicle Collision Reports Rising In Northampton Township

Northampton Township Police are warning motorists to beware at dawn and dusk after reporting a number of crashes and carcasses.

NORTHAMPTON TOWNSHIP, PA —Be alert for deer this time of the year.

The Northampton Township Police Department posted on its Facebook page Friday that it has investigated six deer crashes and another six deer carcasses from crashes that weren’t reported.

The department is asking motorists to use caution, especially during the priority times of dawn and dusk.

Pennsylvania is among the states where drivers are most likely to strike a deer, State Farm found in a deer-vehicle collision study.

The insurance agency stated in its 2020 study that state drivers have a 1 in 58 chance of striking a deer or another animal. The national average is 1 in 116.

Pennsylvania drivers still rank #1 in the nation for the number of animal collision claims with just over 155,000 estimated animal collision claims filed from July 1, 2021, to June 30, 2022.

One West Chester man was charged in a deer-related crash in August.

October and November are peak times for deer-related car crashes in Pennsylvania, according to PennDOT.

State Farm also offered these additional tips to avoid hitting deer:

  • Slow down, particularly at dusk and dawn.
  • If you see one deer, be prepared for more deer to cross the road.
  • Pay attention to deer crossing signs.
  • Always buckle up — every trip, every time.
  • Use your high beams to see farther, except when there is oncoming traffic.
  • Brake if you can, but avoid swerving, which can result in a more severe crash.
  • Remain focused on the road. Scan for potential dangers, including animals.
  • Avoid distractions. Devices or eating might cause you to miss seeing an animal.
  • Do not rely on products such as deer whistles. They are not proven effective.
  • If riding a motorcycle, always wear protective gear. Keep focused on the road ahead.
