NORTHAMPTON TOWNSHIP, PA — The GameStop store at the Crossroads Plaza in Richboro closed its doors this week as the company continues to scale back its retail footprint.

The retail chain, which bills itself as the world's largest retail gaming store, will also close its Warminster store on Street Road at the Center Point Place on Jan. 15. Pennsylvania stores in Willow Grove, Hazleton and Beaver Falls have also closed or will be closing, according to reports.

The GameStop store at the Pointe Shopping Center in Doylestown closed last year, leaving only two stores in Bucks County - Fairless Hills and Levittown - following this round of closures.

Industry experts said that GameStop is closing stores due to a major shift to digital game purchases, hurting its core business. Due to high-operating costs, the chain is shrinking its store portfolio across the nation by shutting underperforming locations to cut expenses and adapt to changing consumer habits.

The company has streamlined operations, closed hundreds of stores globally over the past few years as physical game sales decline, with plans to focus on other areas like trading cards and potentially digital assets.
