Mark your calendars: Newtown Welcome Day is set for Sunday, May 3.

The family-friendly event, sponsored annually by the Newtown Business Association, features an arts and crafts show, music, street entertainers, food, interactive games and booths showcasing local businesses and organizations.

It will be held rain or shine from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on North Sycamore Street between Washington Avenue and Durham Road in Newtown.

Event organizers are seeking singers of all ages as part of Welcome Day’s Rising Star Competition. The contest begins at 12:30 p.m. at Bill Marsh Ford, 10 North Sycamore St.

Contestants will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Interested vocalists should contact Dan Paulish at djpaulish@comcast.net. The deadline for entries is April 15. The singing competition is open to all area vocalists, grades 7 to adult.

Bill Marsh Ford is donating $150.00 for the first-prize winners in both the adult category and the 7th grade through 12th grade student bracket, according to organizers.

In addition, the first-prize winner in the student category will receive a scholarship for Broadway Break Thru, a summer drama camp at George School from August 3-8.
