St Katharine Drexel Catholic Schools hosts First Annual SKD STEM Design Challenge

First Annual SKD STEM Design Challenge

St. Katharine Drexel School students in grades 5, 6, & 7 will compete in a STEM design challenge on Thursday, March 2, 2017. The winning 6th and 7th grade teams will advance to the 2017 STEM Design Challenge for Bucks County .

For the design challenge, the students are instructed to create a ride for a new amusement park that makes green energy a priority. Their ride must represent the environmentally friendly approach that the owners are requiring. Each ride must use at least 1 motor and cannot use more than 1400 K’Nex pieces. In addition, each team needs to keep a journal of the design process, create a blueprint of their ride, provide an inventory and an overall cost of their project, and present their project to judges.

SKD is eager to welcome students from Archbishop Wood Catholic High School in Warminster, PA on Thursday who will serve as judges for this competition. Awards will be given for the "Design Challenge Winner, Best Green Resource, Best Blueprint, Best Journal, Best Presentation, and Most Creative". The students will have their projects, journals, and blueprints on display in the school gymnasium. Parents are welcome to visit the displays from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM on Thursday, 3/2/2017.
