Follow-Up Files: Ross Fire Marshal Rules on Pair of Recent Fires

One fire is determined to be accidental, the other remains somewhat of a mystery.

As suspected, an at the Highlands at Chapel Hill condominiums was caused by a stove's electric burner being left on.

said the occupant of the apartment, located at 5900 Babcock Boulevard, had been cooking earlier in the day, and thought he had turned off all of the stove's burners.

"But we found the switch in the on position after the fire was extinguished," said Reubi.

at a home at 444 Bascom Avenue remains a bit more of a mystery.

Investigators suspect a motorcyle, put back in the garage a short time before the fire broke out, is to blame.

"But we can't prove it," said Reubi. “The owner just brought it out to run it because he had it up for sale, and then he put it back in the garage, like he’s done many times before.”

The fire started after the owner left, in the garage of the 4-bedroom Cape Cod. The home, which had been for sale, was heavily damaged. The owner, Gerald Fabiszewski, had moved out, but many of his belongings were still inside.

"The cause of the fire is undertermined, although we suspect the motorcyle had something to do with it, since the fire clearly started in the garage," Reubi said.

No one was home when the fire started; one firefighter was taken to the hospital for a shoulder injury.
