
Bellyfit Debuts at Club Julian
Club Julian offers its members more than 70 group fitness classes each week, but none quite like the newest addition to the Wednesday evening line-up, Bellyfit.
“Bellyfit is for women who aren’t afraid to try something different, have fun, and not worry about what other people think when they’re exercising,” says Dana Sabo, Club Julian group fitness instructor. “It is for women who want to feel comfortable in their own bodies, and who want to do something that is going to make them feel good.”
According to Dana, Bellyfit is not a dance class as many believe. Instead, it blends elements of Belly Dance, Bollywood, African dance, Yoga, and Pilates in a holistic approach to fitness, including an emphasis on posture and breathing. Every Bellyfit session starts with a “posture check,” and what Dana calls “belly breaths” that are similar to Pilates breathing techniques where participants focus on inhaling through their nose and exhaling through the mouth. The first part of the class is all cardio and the second part incorporates Pilates and Yoga, finishing with a Mudra Meditation.

“Bellyfit is a great alternative for people who want to do cardio along with sculpting and stretching, but don’t have time to fit multiple classes into their schedule,” says Dana. She also adds that members will be pleasantly surprised at how effective and challenging the half-hour of cardio is. "We are constantly moving – there is no stopping.”
Dana adds that anyone can do Bellyfit, and those who have tried it during the first two weeks say that it is different, fun, and easy-to-learn.

“You don’t have to be good at dancing, I got better as it went on,” says Club Julian member Josie B, who tried the new class when it was offered for the second time on July 17. “It’s womanly, I felt empowered and comfortable in my own skin,” adds member Sarah P.
