On Friday June
14th at 7pm the Toonseum will be hosting the opening release for a brand new
comic Oakland which will be hosted by Phantom of the Attic. Copies of
Oakland will be available, as will a specialty print of the double page spread
of Phantom of the Attic by Marcel Walker that appears in the book. Many of
the artists will also be on hand for autographs.
The guide,
called OAKLAND, features short comic vignettes of great Oakland venues
such as The Original Hot Dog Shop, Phipps Conservatory, and the Cathedral
of Learning. Funded by a grant from the Fine Foundation, the ToonSeum
(Pittsburgh’s Museum of Comic and Cartoon Art) partnered with 16
cartoonists and 15 organizations to create a comprehensive visitors guide to
the neighborhood.

Pittsburgh
cartoonists generously donated their talents to OAKLAND. DC comics veteran
Christopher Moeller, Highlights Magazine’s Diana Zourelias, plus newcomers
Jeremy Baum, Nate McDonough, and Jessica Herberle are just a small sample of
the talent involved in creating OAKLAND. Local businessman and avid
comic fan Harold Behar donated his time to serve as Editor for this anthology.
It was under his guidance that the guide became a tribute to many venues
in Oakland, big and small, famous and unknown. Behar made the purposeful
decision to celebrate the famous sites of Pittsburgh and perhaps introduce
readers to lesser-known organizations, like the Friday Night Improv in the
Cathedral of Learning and the historic (but demolished) Luna Park.
