5 Things you can do to clear the negative energy and raise the positive energy in your home.
During my interviews with some of the guests at the Cystic Fibrosis Gala, I asked, “What energy do you feel in the room?” One guest said it best with “everyone is beautiful.” It was true…everyone; short, tall, big, small, young and old was radiant. The room was positively electric and everyone seemed to have a “sexy little swagger” in their step…they had stepped out in their best gowns and tuxes and were there to celebrate, honor and have fun!
Every space holds energy. Even though you can’t see it, you’ve probably sensed it. Think back to a time when you walked into a room and could “feel” there has been an argument or the flip side, when you walked into a room and immediately felt a sense of calm or peacefulness. In both cases, you were probably tuning into the energy of the space. Feng Shui, house blessings and sacred spaces operate under the principle that we create positive energetic and spiritual connections in spaces that include our thoughts, feelings, words and the actions, incidents and the history that has occurred there. Conversely, spaces where negative or traumatic events have occurred can be associated with feelings of negativity, darkness or heaviness.

Energetic and spiritual connections can impact the people who are in those spaces both positively and negatively. In fact, many states have real estate laws that dictate incidents such as suicides or violent deaths must be disclosed when selling a house or property. Time magazine has even run stories on the Top 10 Haunted Places. Sedona, Arizona is famous for it’s energy vortices and scientists come from all over the world to study them. Many Catholic families have a long rich tradition of having their homes blessed by their priest, Buddhist monks use sounds and symbols to clear away negative energy and Native Americans have always implemented white sage as a way to cleanse spaces, people and events.
Just like a good floor scrubbing or thorough dusting of a home and its contents are good housekeeping practices, clearing the energy and giving your rooms a “fresh energy booster” can also be beneficial to having a healthy, happy, prosperous home. A good time to clear energy is before moving into a new space, after a construction project is complete, after an illness or argument, during or after any major life event, anytime you feel stuck or down, or when your space simply doesn’t feel right. You can also perform an energy cleansing when you are simply trying to usher in more positive energy.

To do an energetic cleansing to your room can be relatively easy…follow these 5 steps and feel the difference:
1. To begin the process, create an environment that invites change. Get rid of any clutter or unused items…consider donating things that are in good condition, but just not important to you anymore. Clean out drawers and closets. Then give the space a thorough cleaning.
2. Open your front door specifically and other doors and windows generally throughout your home. If possible, doing this on a sunny day when there is a breeze or some wind is ideal. You can also use ceiling fans to get the air moving. Keep the doors open for anywhere between 20 minutes and an hour.
3. Singing crystal bowls, bells or gongs provide positive energy sounds to help clear space. Buddhist ceremonial sounds are great and I have used a Native American drumming CD. There are plenty of options available in CD format or downloads. Whatever your choice, play them while your doors and windows are open.
4. Once you have closed your doors and windows, light a sage smudge stick and walk it throughout the house, taking care to go into corners, opening drawers and closets and moving around furniture. When you light the sage, it will smoke, but will not continue to flame. That said, hold it in a fireproof dish and be careful to not let any embers fall.
5. In a spray bottle, mix some fresh lemon juice, essential oils such as lavender, patchouli or pine together and spray the mixture into the rooms in your home.
All the ingredients for a space cleansing are available locally at Journey’s Bookstore in Shadyside or in any Whole Foods Store nationally. After doing a cleansing, it can be nice to have a little get-together with close friends…inviting laughter and new energy into your home. An important factor to keep in mind is, all the steps should be followed with a clear intention to clear the space and invite positive new energy in. Your home affects the quality of your life whether it is “crazy” source of chaos, confusion and stress or your oasis of comfort, peace and tranquility. Why not consider making it your “soft place to land” that inspires and supports you to have, be and do all that makes you happy.
