Traffic Signal Temporarily Installed On Parkway North On-Ramp

ROSS TOWNSHIP, PA - You’re not seeing things. There’s a temporary traffic signal on the inbound Parkway North on-ramp at the Bellevue-West View interchange.

For this week and next weeks, the signal will be operations weekdays from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and could be operational for sporting or special events. After next week, the system will automatically during heavy traffic.

This ramp signal pilot program, a joint effort by PennDOT and the Federal Highway Administration, will be in effect until early September. Here’s how the signal will manage the rate at which vehicles move from the ramp to the parkway:

  • Signs with flashing yellow lights indicate that ramp signals are in effect.
  • The ramp signal is located approximately at the midpoint of the ramp. The ramp signal only has a red and green signal.
  • Motorists must stop when the signal is red.
  • Only one vehicle at a time can proceed through a green signal.
  • Motorists will merge onto the parkway as they normally do one they go through the green light.


If the ramp becomes congested, the signal will operate at a faster rate to relieve the queue. The system will not be active during off-peak travel times.

The Federal Highway Administration selected the Pittsburgh region for the pilot project to gather data tol help engineers better manage traffic in construction zones.
