In a 3-2 vote, the Forks Township Board of Supervisors have decided to let the dogs out — in the township's park system.
The township has set up a fine system, $50 for first offense, $100 for second and $150 for the third.
"I don't have a problem allowing this," Supervisors Chairman Erik Chuss said. "People come all over the Valley. We hear nothing but praise for our parks."
Supervisor David Billings, based on resident comments, suggested a dog park.
Chuss, Billings and John ONeil voted yes while Supervisors Bob Egolf and Dan Martyak voted against the measure.
Martyak said he talked to about 30-40 people regarding the issue and most were split. He also pushed for a 6-foot leash on dogs in the park.
Chuss said he talked to other officials of towns that allow dogs in their parks.
"There were no complaints," he said. "But we have dogs in our parks now. This is an enforcement issue that needs to be addressed. I think this is worth a try People will self-police. If it can't be handled, we will come down hard."
Parks and Recreation Director Rachel Sulzbach said allowing dogs in Forks Township Community Park is supported by the recreation board.
O’Neil stated that stations for bagged dog waste should be cemented to the ground so they can't be removed.
Chuss said if the dogs become an issue, then supervisors would address it.
