Green and Minnick Qualify for District Tourney
Perk Valley and Pope John Paull II were in full force at Pac-10 singles championships
In the PAC-10 singles championship, the best golfers in the area hit the links at Gilbertsville Golf Club vying for the Pioneer Athletic Conference Championship and a berth in the PIAA District One tournament.
Conditions were more like a course in the Amazon rivershed with annoying wildlife (more specifically gnats), soggy fairways and the unforgiving, soaking-wet rough, the only saving grace was that the golfers were able to give themselves relief plucking balls out of the mud and replacing them.
With the top 18 boys finishers guaranteed a spot in the District One field and girls scoring under 97 getting the invite, the day got under way around 8:45 a.m., and their was goal on the minds of everyone.

The area was well represented, and has two players that have qualified for districts overall, with Vikings sophomore Connor Green leading the way leading the way with a score of 78.
“Of course I thought I had a shot at it,” said Green. “But I have to be honest and say that I didn’t have any expectation of making it in my first year. My short game really saved me today and the lift rule was very beneficial with the wet ground. To make districts is great; to qualify for states would be awesome.”

For Pope John Paul II, all seven boys broke the century marks. Cole Bernsteil just missed qualifying with a round of 84. John Oczypok, who posted a loop of 88, closely followed Bernsteil.
On the ladies side of the docket, Vikings junior Jenny Minnick posted a score of 88, which is nine strokes under the qualifying number. She and five other ladies from the PAC-10 claimed a spot in the District One Championship.
“Wow, I really covered every bit of the ninth hole,” said Minnich. “Hopefully I won’t freak out this year at districts. I will practice this week and hit the range and get ready. All of us from the PAC-10 side know each other very well, and we will all support each other in the district tournament. Hopefully a few of us get to play together. Last year I was really nervous here, and today I wasn’t so hopefully I will be able to relax and just play.”
