Perkiomen to Change Solicitor and Peddlers Ordinance

The Solicitor and Peddlers of Act of 1961 is being changed to be allow fewer permits to be issued.

The Perkiomen Township Board of Supervisors plans to to initiate background checks for solicitors and peddlers applying for a permit in the municipality, according to a discussion at the body's May meeting.

The background check would be valid for one year and after that one year would need to be renewed for permit renewal. Permits, valid from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. until Sunset Monday through Saturday, are now good for 30 days and are $100 per permit.

Perkiomen Township Manager Cecile M. Daniels says the change is necessary because "too many solicitation permits are being issued," and the $100 price to own a solicitation permit for a year could limit that number.

After passing the background checks and receiving a permit the solicitor or peddler would receive a list of residents and businesses that have requested no solicitors be on their property.
