Flu Season Starting Early, Vaccines Still Available

The Post-Gazette reports that flu season in the U.S. is off to its earliest start in nearly a decade and that the primary strain circulating is particularly hard on the elderly.

If you haven't gotten your flu vaccine, it's not too late.

The following local pharmacies offer flu vaccinations without appointments:

• Prescription Center Plus: Flu shots are available during normal hours from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekends. Without insurance, vaccinations cost $25 or $20 with a loyalty card.
• Walgreens: Flu shots are available during normal hours 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Shots cost $31.99 without insurance.
• Giant Eagle: Without insurance, flu shots cost $24.99. Call ahead to be sure there is someone working who can give you the flu shot. The number is 724-941-7220.
• Rite Aid: Flus shots are available during normal hours 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday, and cost $29.99 without insurance.
• CVS: Flu shots are available during normal hours 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Shots cost $31.99 without insurance.

The Allegheny County Health Department recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older should get a flu vaccine.

Certain people are at greater risk of serious illness and death from flu:

• Young children
• Older adults
• Pregnant women
• Persons with chronic health conditions including heart, lung or kidney diseases, diabetes and weakened immune systems

Persons who live with or care for people at high risk for developing flu-related complications should also receive influenza vaccine.

• Health care workers
• Family and caregivers of young children, especially infants
