Longtime Pittsburgh DJ Departing Station

PITTSBURGH, PA — A veteran Pittsburgh disc jockey has announced he is leaving his station at the end oft the week.

Kenny Woods, the morning host at WORD-FM, which has predominantly religious programming, announced his impending departure on social media.

"It's retirement week!" he stated.

"This has been coming for a long time, but now that the final day (4/30) is looming it's a little weird. Radio (primarily WVAQ, WYDD/WNRJ, 3WS and WORD-FM,) has been the only job I've ever wanted or had. So doing everything "for the last time ever" is very weird.

"I've been very blessed to be able to do this for a living, and for the support of many listeners and followers like you all. Maybe someday, if I need the cash, you'll recognize my voice when I greet you at Walmart!"

According to his station web page, Woods was not named for the West Mifflin amusement park.

Raised on a farm in rural Allegheny County, Woods would lay in bed at night with a small transistor radio tucked under his pillow, pulling in distant AM stations from around the country and dreaming of the day he'd get to play the hits for his listeners. It happened. He was able to work in radio adio stations in Pittsburgh and nearby areas his entire career.

Woods is married with one daughter (and son-in-law) and two grandsons. Instead of pets, he spends his spare time chasing the wild game out of his back yard, including deer, coyotes, squirrels, raccoons and groundhogs.

WORD has not announced a replacement for Woods.
