15-Cent Paper Bag Fee Bill Passes Philly City Council: Reports

If Mayor Jim Kenney signs the bill, customers at stores, restaurants, and more will foot the 15-cent bill per bag, if bags are taken.

PHILADELPHIA — After the ban on single-use plastic bags went into effect last year, Philadelphia Councilman Mark Squilla sought to make single use bags even less common through new legislation.

Squilla's ordinance amendment on Thursday got approval by the Philadelphia City Council with a 13-2 vote, The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The amendment requires "retail establishments to charge a fee for the provision of a bag to customers for removal of purchased items, and further defining what bags are prohibited at check out, all under certain terms and conditions."
