2 Carjackings, 1 Deadly, Land Philly Man 25-Year Prison Sentence

A food delivery driver who was the victim of a December 2021 carjacking later died from the injuries he suffered in the incident.

PHILADELPHIA — A man who admitted to two carjackings in Philadelphia, one of which resulted in a food delivery driver's death, was sentenced to federal prison Wednesday.

United States Attorney Jacqueline C. Romero said John Nusslein, 20, of Philadelphia, was sentenced to 25 years in prison and five years of supervised release. He was also ordered to pay restitution of $5,300, and a $300 special assessment.

Nusslein in April this year pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit carjacking, one count of carjacking resulting in death, and one count of carjacking resulting in serious bodily injury after being charged in June 2022.

Authorities said Nusslein carjacked two people in November and December 2021 in Northeast Philadelphia.

On Dec. 2, 2021, Nusslein and two others placed a food delivery order to an address on the 3000 block of Teesdale Street in Philadelphia, as a ruse to lure their intended victim to that location.

At about 7 p.m. that day, when the victim, a food delivery driver, arrived at that location, Nusslein and two others approached the victim, hitting him repeatedly in an effort to steal his 2004 Toyota Camry.

The victim was later taken to the hospital by first responders, and on Dec. 21, 2021, the victim succumbed to his injuries and the Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office determined that the cause of death was the assault that he sustained during the carjacking.

Authorities also said Nusslein and another person committed a similar carjacking on Dec. 16, 2021.

They again placed a food delivery order to an address on the 9000 block of Hilspach Street in Philadelphia, as a ruse to lure their intended victim to that location.

At about 9:10 p.m., the victim, another a food delivery driver, arrived at that location.

That's when authorities said Nusslein and the other person approached the victim, pointed a firearm at him, demanded his money, and hit him to take the victim's 2015 Infiniti QX5.

Nusslein and the other person drove off in the stolen Infiniti.
