3 Philly Chefs, Restaurants Named 2023 James Beard Award Winners

Philadelphia brought home three James Beard Awards in 2023, continuing the trend of the city making national waves in the culinary world.

PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia has three new James Beard Award winners after this weekend's ceremony in Chicago.

The "Oscars of the food world" were recently held in Chicago and Philadelphia was represented quite well, with three purveyors from the city earning high honors at the James Beard Awards.

Friday Saturday Sunday was named Outstanding Restaurant. Other local winners include Ellen Yin of High Street Hospitality Group and Chef Chutatip "Nok" Suntaranon of Kalaya.

Friday Saturday Sunday, located at 261 S 21st St., won the Outstanding Restaurant award, giving them the determination of the nation's best restaurant, per the James Beard Foundation.

Yin — whose High Street Hospitality runs Fork, a.kitchen + bar, High Street, and more — won the Outstanding Restaurateur award. That means she's the nation's best restaurateur, according to the foundation.

And lastly, Suntaranon won Best Chef in the Mid-Atlantic region, which includes Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Virginia, Maryland, and Washington DC.

In total, six Philadelphia restaurants and chefs were nominated for the 2023 awards.

Amanda Shulman of Her Place Supper Club was a nominee in the Emerging Chef category, while Jesse Ito of Royal Sushi and Dionicio Jiménez of Cantina La Martina were in the running for Best Chef in the Mid-Atlantic.

James Beard Foundation CEO Clare Reichenbach said that together, the winners’ “achievements and dedication have left an indelible mark on our industry.”

“As we celebrate, it’s important to acknowledge the significant work that these accomplished restaurants and chefs have done to push American food culture forward — using their immense creativity, passion and talent to create extraordinary experiences on behalf of others,” Reichenbach said, according to a news release announcing the awards.
