Police Seek Driver Suspected In Mass Shooting At SEPTA Bus Stop

Philadelphia Police are seeking a fourth suspect involved in a shooting Wednesday that injured eight people, the driver of the stolen car.

PHILADELPHIA, PA —Philadelphia Police are looking for the driver of the car they say was used in a mass shooting that injured eight students who were waiting for a bus Wednesday afternoon in Philadelphia. One of the victims, who officials said was shot nine times, is in critical condition.

Deputy Commissioner Frank Vanore said Thursday afternoon in an update on the shooting that a 2019 dark blue Hyundai Sonata was impounded in Olney. He said the vehicle matched the description in the shooting in the city's Burholme neighborhood.

Vanore said there was a fourth person who was driving the vehicle involved in the shooting. He said the blue Hyundai Sonata was found on Fern Street.

Vanore said that three handguns were involved in Wednesday's shooting and 34 cartridges were found on the scene. He said that all of the students shot attended Northeast High School. They were waiting for a SEPTA bus when the shooting occured.

It had been stolen from the 7th District on Saturday. Vanore said another stolen vehicle was found there. He said that car was exited and the suspects then used the stolen Hyundai.

He said this was the second school bus stop shooting incident with another in which three others were shot on Monday. Vanore said he didn't know if both incidents were connected.

"I don't know the motive," Vanore said. "They went to the bus stop. Let us know who did this so we can end this very quickly."

Vanore added: "Things are coming together, we have received numerous tips, and are moving towards knowing more about who we may be looking for."

Of the victims, was a 17-year-old boy was shot nine times and is listed in critical condition, but that doctors are optimistic about his chances of survival.

At 2:59 p.m. Wednesday, numerous 911 calls were received reporting a mass shooting on the highway near Dunkin Donuts at 7300 Rising Sun Ave.

Police responded, locating several victims at the scene. Except for one victim who was transported by private vehicle, all were transported to local hospitals by either by PFD Medics or arriving officers.

Philadelphia Police listed the victims as:

  • A 15-year-old boy sustained two gunshot wounds to the left arm and one to the upper back, in stable condition.
  • A 15-year-old boy was shot once in the lower back, in stable condition.
  • A 16-year-old boy suffered gunshot wounds to the chest, right leg, and right arm, in stable condition.
  • A 16-year-old boy sustained nine gunshot wounds to the torso and is in critical condition.
  • A 16-year-old girl was shot once in the left buttocks and right thigh, in stable condition.
  • A 17-year-old boy was shot once in the left leg, in stable condition.
  • A 16-year-old boy was shot once in the left leg, in stable condition.
  • A 16-year-old boy sustained one gunshot wound to the upper back, in stable condition.

The scene was secured, with no arrests made at this time.

Additionally, a SEPTA bus that was struck by gunfire was held at a nearby Terminal (1500 Pratt) for further investigation.
