📰 News we're reading

1. Driver Killed In Erratic, Fiery Crash On I-95 In Philadelphia: Police (patch.com) — A driver was killed early Saturday when a Dodge Charger, reportedly moving erratically, slammed into a concrete barrier and burst into flames on I-95 North near Girard Avenue in Philadelphia. State Police and the Philadelphia Fire Department responded, but the driver could not be saved and has not yet been identified, while investigators work to determine what caused the erratic driving.

2. Philadelphia's Market Street Bridge closed for more than a year (whyy.org) — Drivers, cyclists, and SEPTA riders in Philadelphia face major changes as the Market Street Bridge in Center City closes to vehicles through October 2027 for a $148.9 million overhaul. One sidewalk stays open, but several bus routes will detour and nearby streets will see years of parking restrictions while crews replace bridge spans, decks, sidewalks, and add protected bike lanes.

3. 4 school-zone speed cameras now enforcing in Philadelphia (northeasttimes.com) — If you drive near four Philadelphia schools, new speed cameras are now issuing tickets with no warning period as students return to class. The PPA says earlier Roosevelt Boulevard cameras slashed speeding and crashes, and it's using that success to justify expanding automated enforcement across more neighborhoods citywide.

4. E-bike crash sparks argument, shooting in South Philadelphia (northeasttimes.com) — An early-morning e-bike crash in South Philadelphia escalated into a fight and shooting that left two men injured on Mifflin and later Chestnut Street, police say. Both victims are in stable condition, ballistic evidence was recovered, and Philadelphia detectives are reviewing surveillance footage as they search for whoever pulled the trigger.

5. Clinical trial in Philadelphia gives new hope for rare blood cancer patient: "I feel like a miracle" (cbsnews.com) — A new phase-one clinical trial at Temple's Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia is testing a combination of two FDA-approved drugs for people with advanced myelofibrosis. One participant says her symptoms have improved dramatically, and doctors hope the approach can significantly reduce suffering even though it's not a cure.
