🌱 Blue Wave In PA + Tropical Storm Nicole + Four New Councilmembers

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Philadelphia.

(Patch Media)

Good morning, neighbors! It's me, Patty-Pat Kozlowski, your host of the Philadelphia Daily. Here's all the local news you need to know right now, including...

  • PA Democrats believe they've flipped the State House of Representatives.
  • Tropical Storm Nicole will soon turn into Hurricane Nicole and deliver us a wet weekend.
  • Philly City Council has four new members due to a special election.

But first, today's weather:

Plenty of sunshine. High: 67 Low: 55.

Here are the top three stories today in Philadelphia:

  1. With Josh Shapiro winning the governor's race and John Fetterman winning the U.S. Senate seat, it looks like Pennsylvania has turned a deep shade of blue. On Wednesday, Democrats in the PA House of Representatives stood in front of Independence Hall and declared they are now the majority in Harrisburg — even though votes are still being counted. 2. Yes, it may be late in the season, but Tropical Storm Nicole, soon to be Hurricane Nicole, is making its way toward Florida and will eventually move through the Delaware Valley. As it strengthens off the coast of Florida, it should arrive in the Philly region on Friday and give us a cold, rainy and windy weekend, so plan accordingly. (PA Patch)
  3. Philadelphia City Council will gain four new members, following a set of special elections prompted by a recent wave of resignations in advance of the mayoral race next year.
The four winners on Tuesday — Quetcy Lozada in District 7, Anthony Phillips in District 9, and Sharon Vaughn and Jim Harrity for the two at-large seats — are all Democrats who led their opponents by double digits in the vote count. Vaughn, a 33-year employee of City Council and leader of the 42nd Ward received 80% of the votes in her contest. (billypenn.com)

Or, for Philadelphians that want to hop a train and visit the cool little towns with awesome and eccentric main streets like Haddonfield, Collingswood and Westmont, go ahead and make the world (or a little part of South Jersey) your oyster! (PhillyVoice.com)
  • Sure, drivers in Philadelphia have heard of and sometimes loathe the Conshy Curve on the Schulykill Expressway, but in lower northeast Philly, we have the Harbison Hard Turn in Wissonoming where many cars and trucks wind up missing it and hitting the fire house. So many motorists have crashed and skidded into the fire station that concrete barriers have been installed to stop the impacts. Well, one car decided instead of calling 911 for a car crash, he would just miss the turn, hop the barriers and drive through the firehouse garage door. ( PA Patch)
