At the heart of this talk is Peale's iconic self-portrait The Artist in His Museum (1822)—a masterwork that captures Peale lifting a curtain to reveal his Philadelphia Museum's natural history wonders, inviting viewers into a space where art, science, and civic education converge. But the Peale story doesn't end with Charles Willson. His children—Raphaelle, Rembrandt, Rubens, Titian, and more—carried forward his artistic legacy, each making distinct contributions to American portraiture, still life, and museum culture.
A Nation of Artists features at least nine works by Peale family members, and PAFA's reinstalled galleries spotlight their enduring influence on American visual culture. Dr. Bellion, a leading Peale scholar, reveals why this family mattered so deeply to the formation of American identity and why their work continues to speak powerfully today.

Sonja Morgan is a television personality, fashion designer, and entrepreneur best known for appearing on The Real Housewives of New York City. Prior to joining the cast in 2010, Sonja had long been considered one of the most prominent "movers and shakers," beginning in the '80s as she balanced her studies at FIT with modeling around the globe. Sonja soon became a luxury brand consultant, and always had her finger on the pulse of the very best restaurants, hotels, and fashion. Restaurateur Sirio Maccioni of Le Cirque once said that "very few people have her talent in our business," and Esquire Magazine's John H. Mariani labeled her as "the straw that stirs the drink."
Having long been celebrated for her fashion taste in the New York society pages, and given her history working in the fashion world, Sonja debuted her fashion collection at New York Fashion Week in 2015. Sonja Morgan New York offers a wide variety of luxury fashions at an appealing price point. In 2017 she introduced her heritage brand shoe line, Sonja Morgan by French Sole, and the following year her empire expanded once again with the launch of Sonja by Sonja Morgan, a curated selection of affordable fashions and accessories all under $150.
It was Sonja's keen eye for business opportunities that led her to The Real Housewives of New York City. Though she initially declined to join the hit reality series when it launched, she signed on in season 3, and ever since has been lauded by viewers for her boisterous personality and one-of-a-kind sense of humor. She's been a member of the NBCUniversal family for over a decade, and is regularly asked to participate in advertising up-fronts, scripted comedies, commercials, and major motion pictures.
Her performing work has included her hit "caburlesque" show (a term coined by Sonja herself), a successful run in the Off-Broadway comedy Sex Tips for Straight Women from a Gay Man, an appearance in Hulu's "Difficult People," and a performance at Improv Asylum. Behind the camera, Sonja has served as a producer on movies such as The Marsh, starring Oscar-winner Forest Whitaker, and the 2018 film The Man in the Attic.
Sonja has long been an advocate for the arts, children, animals, and the LGBTQ community and since 1991 has worked with a wide variety of charities including New Yorkers for Children, The Princess Grace Foundation, ASPCA, and GLAAD. Sonja is often celebrated for her philanthropic contributions, going back to 1995 when she was honored at the St. Regis alongside Mira Sorvino and Vanessa Noel for her charity work as a young single woman.
It's Sonja's rich personal life that helps make her such a great fit for the hit reality franchise. As a young professional, Sonja broke off her six-year engagement with Italian Count PierFrancesco, who she lived with between Rome and Manhattan. For years the tabloids covered her escapades with famous and influential men, including Prince Albert of Monaco, comedian Richard Lewis, rock legend Eric Clapton, and tennis player John McEnroe. But it was with banker John Adams Morgan, descendant of financier J.P. Morgan and Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams, that Sonja met her match. Their "merger" resulted in a successful, loving decade-long marriage and a beautiful daughter.

Join the Smithsonian Libraries &amp; Archives and the American Philosophical Society for a Lunch at the Library and the final installment of City of Knowledge: Science, Place, Power.&nbsp; Over the past few months, these programs have explored Washington, D.C.’s rich scientific history, and its role as a capital city of science. This final event &nbsp;will turn our attention back to the time of the American Revolution, to a second capital city of science. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Philadelphia anchored the nascent yet impressive scientific advancements in Early America. Why did so many ideas, resources, and people flow into Philadelphia, and how did the city’s scientific status give cultural and physical definition to the very first capital city of the United States?&nbsp;
City of Knowledge is a four-part, cross-institutional program series that contemplates Washington, D.C. as a center of scientific power, specifically how geography, politics, and Federal institutions—including the Smithsonian, founded with a bequest from a scientist—shaped American scientific identity. The series examines how institutions shape public trust, policy, and civic engagement in American science, as well as how scholars, communities, and cultural stewards influence the creation and circulation of knowledge. The first program, held at the American Institute of Physics on February 26, explored the history of the physical sciences—from mid nineteenth-century weather observers at the Smithsonian to the Space Race during the Cold War. The second panel, held at the MLK Library on March 31, will take a look at the life sciences, and the third, held at the DC History Center on April 16, will focus more precisely on urban history—how has science shaped our built environments, and how has it contributed to, or hindered, the creation of a just and livable city?
This final panel takes us to a new city, but remains committed to two essential questions. How has science shared a history with our urban places? And why should the place of science matter when we write the history of science?&nbsp;
This is a conversation designed to spark dialogue among panelists and with the audience and will include a Q&amp;A as part of the program.
The event will take place as part of the APS's Lunch at the Library Series on Thursday, May 14, 2026 at 12:00 p.m. ET in Benjamin Franklin Hall and will also be livestreamed. <a href="https://www.amphilsoc.org/form/registration-for-may-14-lunch-a" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">This event is free to attend but registration is required.</a>

Game Changers: A Night of STEM &amp; Sports is SLH Impact’s signature fundraising and community impact event, designed as a high energy, immersive evening that brings together professional athletes, STEM leaders, executives, educators, and supporters who believe in investing in the next generation. SLH Impact is a Philadelphia based nonprofit that expands access to STEM and sports opportunities for underserved youth, using sports as the entry point to spark curiosity, confidence, and long term pathways in STEM. Hosted at The Bellevue Hotel in Philadelphia, Game Changers blends innovation, inspiration, and celebration to directly fuel SLH Impact’s year round work with students across underserved communities.
This is intentionally not a traditional gala. Game Changers is built to feel interactive and experience driven. Guests move through hands on STEM activations, sports challenges grounded in science, and curated moments that spark conversation, connection, and meaningful giving. Throughout the night, attendees will experience the spirit of SLH Impact in real time: the way we use sports as a bridge into STEM, and STEM as a pathway into confidence, career visibility, mentorship, and long term opportunity.
The evening includes an elevated reception, interactive stations and programming, inspiring speakers and honorees, and a live auction featuring both exclusive items and high value experiences. Guests will also enjoy chef driven food, signature drinks, and a lively social atmosphere that keeps the energy up from arrival through the final moments of the night.
Game Changers exists for one purpose: to expand what students believe is possible. Set in Venice and the fictional kingdom of Barataria, the plot centers on two gondoliers, Marco and Giuseppe, who discover that one of them is the rightful king but cannot determine which. They agree to rule jointly until the true monarch can be identified, allowing Gilbert to satirize monarchy, aristocracy, and British political institutions. The show is especially noted for its unusually warm tone and emphasis on equality, reflecting contemporary late-Victorian debates about class and governance.
Through its witty dialogue, lively ensemble numbers, and playful mockery of aristocracy and political systems, the operetta celebrates equality while poking fun at rigid class distinctions and the pretensions of monarchy.
Premiered in 1889, The Gondoliers is the twelfth collaboration between librettist W.S. Gilbert and composer Arthur Sullivan. The show ran for 554 performances, making it one of the duo’s most successful later works.
Introducing Stage Director Grant Mech and Choreographer Rebecca Malcolm-Naib, whose inventive vision brings The Gondoliers to life in a masterful comedy that sparkles under the outstanding baton of Music Director Peter Hilliard and a superb professional orchestra. Produced by William Kader, the production is enhanced by a striking, professionally designed set and delightfully charming costumes.
