Ron Tarver in Conversation with Jordan Bullock and Art Burton

Ron Tarver was a staff photojournalist at The Philadelphia Inquirer for more than 30 years, where he received a Pulitzer Prize and numerous other awards. Tarver has also been awarded Guggenheim Foundation, Independence Foundation, NEA and Pew Fellowships. His work has been widely exhibited in numerous exhibitions nationally and internationally and is included in many public collections. Read Tarver's full bio here.

Jordan Bullock is a Philadelphia-based racehorse trainer whose work is rooted in the city’s tradition of Black urban horsemanship. Raised in North Philadelphia, he grew up as part of the White House Stables in Brewerytown, where his father, George “Bumpsey” Bullock, was a central figure. Bullock gained attention as a young subject of Ron Tarver’s series about Philadelphia's Black cowboys in the early 1990s. Today, he trains at Parx Racetrack, continuing a lifelong dedication shaped by family, community and enduring cultural traditions.

Art T. Burton spent 40 years in higher education as both a Professor of History and an administrator in African American Student Affairs. ​Burton is an award-winning author who published the first books on African American and Native American outlaws and lawmen in the Wild West, as well as African Americans soldiers. His most recent work, Cherokee Bill: Black Cowboy, Indian Outlaw, was published in 2020. In addition to receiving numerous recognitions, Burton has appeared in documentaries and shows on the History Channel, FOX and AHC. He was recently named the Historian for the National Multicultural Western Heritage Museum of Fort Worth, TX. Read Burton's full bio here.
