Carnell Elementary Reopens After Asbestos Abatement

Testing has confirmed that the school was safe for the reoccupancy of students and staff on Monday.

PHILADELPHIA — Laura H. Carnell Elementary School is open again to students and staff after concerns over asbestos closed it.

The School District of Philadelphia said repairs at the school are completed and testing has confirmed that the school was safe for the reoccupancy of students and staff on Monday.

Before winter break, damage to asbestos-containing pipe insulation was found at both Carnell and Alexander McClure elementary schools.

Carnell and McClure have remained closed until all abatement work has been completed, and air testing and cleaning have been conducted.

As a reminder, the anticipated re-entry date for students and staff at Alexander McClure School is Wednesday, Jan. 15, except for Pre-K classes, which are expected to resume at McClure on Tuesday, Jan. 21.
