🌱Columbus Unboxed + Eagles Slay Giants + Who Can We Help?

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Philadelphia.

(Patch Media)

Hello, hello! It's me, Patty-Pat Kozlowski, your host of the Daily. Follow along to find out everything you need to know about what's going on in town, including updates on...

  • Court orders Philadelphia to remove box covering Christopher Columbus statue.
  • The Eagles improved to 12-1 after a decisive 48-22 win on the road against the Giants.
  • What started as a few free turkeys to families in 2019 is now feeding hundreds.

But first, today's weather:

Mostly cloudy. High: 44 Low: 28.

Here are the top three stories today in Philadelphia:

  1. The city of Philadelphia must remove a box that's covered the Christopher Columbus statue in South Philly's Marconi Plaza since June 2020. The 10-foot-tall statue was among several flashpoints during racial justice protests in 2020 following the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis, which prompted the city — and others across the country — to reexamine the historical figures they honor. A panel of judges in the Commonwealth Court of Pennsylvania on Friday reversed a 2021 decision that allowed the city to keep the 146-year-old statue enclosed in a plywood box. (Axios Philadelphia)
  2. The Birds beat the absolute stuffing out of the Giants on the road. Dallas struggled to dispatch the one-win Texans, and Minnesota lost to Detroit. The Eagles clinched a playoff spot in the process and their path to the #1 seed looks rather linear. Reports are coming in that you could hear the Philly fans cheering and hollering at the Meadowlands all the way south on the NJ Turnpike. (Crossing Broad)
  3. Dan Gilman, just a kid from Kensington asked himself a question after delivering a few Thanksgiving turkeys to needy families in 2019. "Who can we help?" Two years later, "Gilly" is feeding hundreds, supplying toys and becoming a non-profit to do bigger and better things. (WPVI-TV)

Today in Philadelphia:

From my notebook:

  • MetLife Stadium sells awful cheesesteaks-The Original New York Cheesesteak Company sells cheesesteaks at MetLife Stadium in North New Jersey. It's a Philadelphian's worst nightmare. ( PhillyVoice)
  • Take all my money and keep the change you filthy animal- because the Philadelphia Film Society (PFS) and the Philadelphia Film Society Young Friends are hosting a special holiday themed Throwback Quizzo screening of Home Alone on December 8th. The first 50 guests to show up will be treated to slices of cheese pizza and all card-carrying PFS Young Friend members will be entitled to a free popcorn. And just like Kevin, PJs are encouraged. ( Wooder Ice)
  • Because playing styro-foam medieval jousting wars in Clark Park wasn't super geeky in a cool way enough-you can now challenge your friends to a street curling match in Franklin Square this winter . (PhillyVoice.com)
