Dog Fatally Shot By Philadelphia Police Officer Monday

Philadelphia Police said a black Pit Bull charged at an officer Monday in West Philadelphia, leading the officer to shoot and kill the dog.

PHILADELPHIA — Another dog has been fatally shot by a Philadelphia Police officer, according to authorities.

The most recent incident, which marks the seventh fatal dog shooting since May 2, occurred at about 1:43 p.m. Monday on the 6100 block of West Colombia Avenue.

Police said the officer and his partner were on patrol at that time when they were called to that block for a report of a vicious dog.

There, a person flagged down the officers and pointed them toward the dog.

One of the officers approached the sidewalk and a black Pit Bull charged at him, police said.

That officer fired at the dog several times, striking it.

Police said the dog ran to the back of a nearby property, where it was found dead.

Police said they are still looking for the dog's owner.

The discharging officer is a 39-year-old, 6-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department who is assigned to the 19th Police District.

He has been placed on administrative duty pending the outcome of the Internal Affairs and Officer-Involved Shooting Investigations.
