🌱Dr. Mummer Rescues + Port Richmond Wants Action + Stop Porch Pirates
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Philadelphia.

Hello, everybody! It's me, Patty-Pat Kozlowski, your host of the Philadelphia Daily. Keep reading for everything you need to know about what's happening in town, including updates on...
- Is there a doctor in the football stadium? Yes, and he's still in his Mummer's costume.
- Hundreds of Port Richmond residents attended a meeting looking for answers after the New Years' morning explosion that leveled homes and injured five.
- Due to porch pirates stealing your Amazon deliveries and mail, private mailbox services are booming in the City of Philadelphia.
But first, today's weather:
Warm with periods of sun. High: 61 Low: 39.
📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Philadelphia who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.
I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our readers to local businesses they need to know. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.
Here are the top three stories in Philadelphia today:
- This has to be the most Philly-thing to happen so far in the New Year. A nurse, decked out in her Eagles gear and a doctor-still dressed in his Mummer's pink dress and facepaint helped save the life of another Eagle's fan at Lincoln Financial Field on New Years' Day when he collapsed in the stands. After a few minutes of performing CPR on the man, his color started to come back and he regained consciousness. When he came to, his first question? What's the score? (WPVI-TV)
- Port Richmond wants answers but it also doesn't want three times to be a charm for a gas explosion that leveled three rowhomes on 3500 Miller Street and damaged 40 more. In 1999, a gas leak caused an explosion and destroyed homes only for the same disaster to happen on New Years' Day a mere block away. Hundreds of residents packed a social hall for a Port Richmond On Patrol and Civic (PROPAC) meeting with PGW, L&I and city officials to get answers but also action so this doesn't happen again. - Since the start of the pandemic, Philadelphians have been ordering more packages than ever. But many of those deliveries aren't reaching their doors. Complaints of so-called porch pirates swiping deliveries and mail from stoops and building lobbies are rampant and have become the norm for living in Philly. Citizens have reported stolen electronics, shoes, pet supplies and Christmas presents to police and the USPS. Now, private mailbox services like Fishbox and Package Safe Club are seeing sky-high demand. (PhillyVoice.com)
Today in Philadelphia:
- High School Literature Keystone Exams (12:00 AM)
- The ABC's of Divorce – Vesta's Philadelphia Suburbs Hub (6:00 PM)
From my notebook:
- No more dining in a parking spot? Philadelphia restaurants have until Monday, Jan. 9, to acquire a license for their streeteries or they must take down their outdoor dining setups, the Street Department said. (PA Patch)
- Celebrate Philly Loves Bowie Week-While he has always seemed otherworldly, David Bowie had deep connections to Philadelphia. His tenure here was brief, but it was a crucial period in the legendary musician's eclectic career as he moved away from glam rock and into his "plastic soul" era inspired by the Sound of Philadelphia. - Wait, I do this all the time if I get dressed in the dark! A local business owner is encouraging customers to wear mismatched socks on purpose, to create a friendlier and more colorful world. Pals is a woman- and LGBTQ-owned sock company in Philadelphia that offers collectible sock pairs featuring two different "pals." Hannah Lavon, founder of Pals, hopes the unique concept helps people be more open-minded about others' differences. (PhillyVoice)
