4.4 Magnitude Earthquake Felt In Philly Region

An earthquake that originated in Delaware was felt in Eastern Pennsylvania on Thursday.

A large earthquake in Delaware was felt in Eastern Pennsylvania on Thursday, the United States Geological Survey confirmed.

The USGS said a 4.4 magnitude earthquake was detected near Dover at 4:47 p.m. Thursday, but the shakes from the quake were felt in around the Philadelphia region and nearly across New Jersey.


Police from South Jersey and elsewhere posted on Facebook about it. One town near Philadelphia sent a Nixle alert:

"Minor Earthquake was reported in the area...Please only use 911 if there are emergencies and not to report damage. More information to follow and confirmation if this actually was a tremor."

It was too early to tell if there was any damage from the quake, but there was plenty of chatter on social media:
