Expanding Access to Fresh Food in North Philadelphia: New Compare & Save Supermarket Opens on Rising Sun Ave

[Philadelphia, PA] – Community leaders, elected officials, local residents, and members of the Batista family and Allegiance Retail Services gathered on Friday, June 5 to celebrate the grand opening of the newest Compare & Save Supermarket at 5201 Rising Sun Avenue in North Philadelphia.

The 15,000-square-foot supermarket, featuring a 12,000-square-foot sales floor, marks the Batista family’s third supermarket opening in North Philadelphia within the past six months. The family previously opened a Compare & Save location on Castor Avenue and a Super Foodtown at Harrowgate Plaza on I Street, continuing their commitment to expanding access to affordable, high-quality groceries in underserved neighborhoods.

Although the Rising Sun Avenue store officially opened in February 2026, the June ribbon-cutting ceremony formally welcomed the supermarket into the community.

The new Compare & Save offers a wide selection of fresh produce, quality meats, seafood, bakery items, and international and Latino grocery products tailored to the preferences of local shoppers. The location, formerly occupied by Save A Lot, follows the successful model established at the family’s Castor Avenue store, emphasizing value, quality, variety, and customer service.

Councilmember At-Large Dr. Nina Ahmad, who was unable to attend the event, shared remarks recognizing the significance of the opening and the Batista family’s continued investment in Philadelphia neighborhoods.

“This is the second supermarket opening by your family in as many months,” Ahmad said in a statement. “What an incredible feat and how important it is for our communities. I love joining the Batista family for these openings because when the Batista family establishes a Compare & Save in a neighborhood, they go to great effort to make their supermarkets culturally competent—something very important to me.”
