🌱Fly, Santa, Fly + Biden In Philly + Unsafe Juvenile Facilities

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Philadelphia.

(Patch Media)

Hello again, everybody! I'm back with your new edition of the Philadelphia Daily. Let's welcome the Phillies home with a big win for Game 3 today at Citizens Bank Park, Keep reading for the most important things going on around town, including updates on:

  • Philadelphia Eagles: The gift that keeps on giving!
  • President Biden crossed the State Thursday with Senate candidate John Fetterman.
  • Juvenile Justice Centers are overcrowded and unsafe; staff pleads to City Council.

But first, today's weather:

Sunny. High: 65 Low: 46.

📢 I'm looking for business owners and marketers in Philadelphia who want to build awareness, connect with customers and increase sales.

I have a limited number of sponsorships available to introduce our Philadelphia Daily readers to local businesses they need to know about. If that's you, then I invite you to learn more and secure your spot now.

Here are the top three stories in Philadelphia today:

  1. The 6-0 undefeated Philadelphia Eagles are putting out a Christmas album. If the title, "A Philly Special Christmas," (named after the Super Bowl-winning Nick Foles catching a TD play) doesn't make you put this on your wish list, maybe a rendition of "'Twas the Night Before Christmas," narrated by Eagles radio legend Merrill Reese will turn you from naughty to nice. (inquirer.com)
  2. President Joe Biden stumped in Pittsburgh and then Philadelphia last night for Senate candidate John Fetterman. The highly watched U.S. Senate race between Fetterman and Dr. Mehmet Oz has started to tighten. A new AARP poll shows the race is now within the margin of error. Fetterman still holds a slight lead with 48% of likely voters, with Oz now at 46%.
  3. Staff from Philly's Juvenile Justice Center addressed City Council about the dangerous overcrowding in its facilities. For example, the juvenile holding facility at 48th and Haverford Streets has the legal capacity to hold 180 juveniles but they constantly have 100 more housed there. One day, only 17 people were working when they needed 53 to properly run the facility safely. (WHYY)

Today in Philadelphia:

  • City Hall Phillies Pep Rally ( 12:00 PM)
  • Friday Lounge - Philadelphia Museum of Art (5:00 PM)
  • Strange Sensations Tarot Night (6:00 PM)
  • Lorna Shore - Theatre of the Living Arts (6:50 PM)
  • NE X NW Short Film Fest - Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy (7:00 PM)
  • Roxey Ballet presents: "Dracula" (7:00 PM)
  • Wedding Crashers' Ball (7:00 PM)

From my notebook:

  • Baseball and Bonfires on the Beach! Organizers of the North Wildwood, NJ Bonfire On The Beach event have announced that a 20-foot screen will be set up to broadcast Game 4 of the National League Championship Series, as the Fightin' Phils play host to the San Diego Padres. Sponsored by the Anglesea Irish Society and the Greater Wildwood Jaycees, the 11th Annual Bonfire on the Beach takes place Saturday, October 22, from 6 - 10 pm at 1st & Surf Avenues. Admission is $10 (only $2 for kids under 12) (Wildwood 365)
  • Worst Case Scenario Cheesesteaks- if the Phillies have to go back to San Diego next week, that means they didn't sweep the Padres at home. If you head out west to cheer them on, don't worry, there's a Philly native out there slinging cheesesteaks. ( PA Patch)
  • Avocados Are Our Jawn. Thousands and we mean thousands, of Philadelphians showed up Thursday at FDR Park, aka "The Lakes" to get their free case of avocados due to a national surplus. Traffic jams, a quarter-mile line and even news helicopters hovering above the guacamole groupies were just part of the charm. Don't worry, you can still go today from 12 noon until they run out of avocados! (billypenn.com)

Nextdoor Asks, Patch Answers

  • Nextdoor Neighbor, Fishtown - West: "Do the garbage trucks for La Colombe Coffee Roasters really need to be coming down the street every day at 6:30am? - Wakes up the entire block." (Nextdoor)

Our bets are on this is the masterplan of La Colombe. Now that you're up, don't you want a cuppa coffee?
