PHILADELPHIA — A huge surplus of avocado supplies in South America has led a non-profit group to host a free avocado distribution event in Philadelphia.

Sharing Excess is hosting "Avogeddon" Wednesday through Friday at FDR Park in South Philadelphia.

"There are literally millions of perfectly edible avocados at risk of going to waste, and we can’t let that happen," Sharing Excess said on social media.

Sharing Excess aims to bridge the gap between excess and scarcity by partnering with grocery stores, restaurants, wholesalers, and farmers to deliver surplus food to a network of nonprofits, food banks, and community organizations to alleviate local food insecurity.

Donations are encouraged to help support Sharing Excess's mission, and every dollar helps the group deliver 16 meals.

FDR Park is located at Pattison Avenue and 20th Street.
