'Full Of Life': Philly Teen, Special Olympic Track Star Dies

Darius Cheston inspired countless people throughout an all-too short life.

PHILADELPHIA, PA — A local teenager and Special Olympics track star who inspired countless people who came into contact with him has died.

Darius Cheston, of Philadelphia, passed on Sept. 30. He was 15.

During the 2021 Summer Sports Special Olympics Finals, Darius brought home two medals, winning the 50 meter dash and placing third in the 100 meter dash.

"He had a stunning smile, a sweet personality, and a big heart," writes Elizabeth Zaremski, who organized a GoFundMe for Darius' family as he battled illness. "He was also an artist, enjoyed video games, and loved his family very much."

Darius spent three months at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, during which he inspired caregivers and staff with his spirit, she added.

A memorial service is set for noon on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at Hughes Funeral Home in Trenton.
