Greater Philadelphia YMCA Lays Off 3,400 Workers

The 3,400 layoffs mark the largest mass layoff in Pennsylvania since the outbreak of the new coronavirus.

PHILADELPHIA — Thousands of people working for the Greater Philadelphia YMCA have been laid off due to the new coronavirus, or COVID-19, crisis, according to reports.

The Greater Philly YMCA laid off 3,400 workers in response to the virus, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry.

According to Action News, only 61 employees remain at all Greater Philly YMCA locations and those workers have taken a pay cuts.

All 16 branches of the YMCA, its 12 early learning centers, and its community service centers have been closed since March 16.

The move is Pennsylvania's largest mass layoff amid the pandemic.

According to data from the Pennsylvania Office of Unemployment Compensation, 378,900 people filed claims between March 15 and March 21. From March 22 to March 25, 271,067 more people filed claims.

Greater Philadelphia YMCA President and CEO Shaun Elliott told the Philadelphia Inquirer the YMCA plans to open all branches once cleared by public health officials.

Elliot said the YMCA's revenue has dropped significantly since the outbreak began, according to the Pennsylvania Capital Star.

Members of Greater Philadelphia YMCA branches can keep their memberships active as a donation, keep them active as a donation and get a month credit tacked on at the end of the year, or freeze the membership.
