PHILADELPHIA — A new report revealed more details about the 2023 tanker truck crash that killed a man and cause a fire that led to a portion of Interstate 95 in Philadelphia to subsequently crash.
According to a report by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the truck that crash on June 11, 2023, under the highway had an open hatch.
That hatch spilled gasoline when the truck crashed, which the National Transportation Safety Board said happened because driver Nathaniel Moody, 53, of New Jersey, was "unable to maintain control of the combination vehicle" on the Cottman Avenue off-ramp.

The NTSB said the 8,500 gallons of gasoline were set to be delivered to a Wawa in Philadelphia.
Flames erupted, likely due to sparks from the crash coming into contact with the spilled gasoline, as well as high-heat caused by friction in the crash,
As a result of the crash and fire, a portion of Interstate 95 north collapsed and a portion of Intestate 95 south was severely compromised due to the intense heat.
The collapsed and demolished portion of Interstate 95 was rebuilt and reopened in just 12 days' time as a six lane highway, featuring three lanes each in the north and southbound directions.
And on May 24 this year, the fully rebuilt highway reopened to full traffic capacity.
