I-95 South Ramp In Philly To Close For 2 Years: PennDOT

PHILADELPHIA — A ramp on Interstate 95 south will be closed for two years starting the evening of Tuesday, July 23 for major work, PennDOT said.

The ramp from southbound Interstate 95 to Girard Avenue in Philadelphia is scheduled to close for two years for reconstruction of the southbound viaduct at the Girard Avenue Interchange and to build new on and off-ramps on the southbound side of the interchange.

After 8 p.m. Tuesday, crews will temporarily close the ramp from Allegheny Avenue to southbound I-95, and then close the cattle chute that leads to the ramp to Girard Avenue following initial adjustments to the construction barrier, effectively closing the Girard Avenue off-ramp through summer 2021.

When the Girard Avenue off-ramp is closed, southbound I-95 traffic normally exiting at Girard Avenue will be directed to take the southbound off-ramp at Allegheny Avenue, turn left on Allegheny Avenue, take an immediate right onto Allen Street — a southbound-only road adjacent to northbound I-95 — and then turn left on Richmond Street to access Girard Avenue or Aramingo Avenue.

During Tuesday night’s operation, traffic normally using the Allegheny Avenue on-ramp to access southbound I-95 will be detoured south on Allen Street, left on Richmond Street, right on Lehigh Avenue, then left on Aramingo Avenue to the ramp to I-95 south at the Girard Avenue Interchange.

The Allegheny Avenue southbound on-ramp is scheduled to reopen by 4 a.m. Wednesday, July 24.

The on-ramp to southbound I-95 from Aramingo Avenue at the Girard Avenue Interchange will remain open during construction at the interchange.

Once the southbound off-ramp at Girard Avenue is closed, crews will begin demolition of the section of the southbound viaduct between Ann Street and Lehigh Avenue and demolition of the off-ramp structure.

Demolition will continue through the remainder of the year.

The work is part of the $312 million project currently underway through 2023 to replace the southbound I-95 viaduct between Palmer Street in Fishtown and Ann Street in Port Richmond, reconstruct and improve the southbound on and off-ramps at Girard Avenue, and rebuild the southbound I-95 pavement between Ann Street and Allegheny Avenue.
