Philly, known affectionately by the locals, has plenty of iconic attractions and fun things to do and see. Here are some of the favorites.

Philadelphia is a lively, ethnically diverse city that is steeped in American history. It is one of the nation's oldest cities. The architecture is stunning, and the neighborhoods are quaint with a bustling food scene. Philly, known affectionately by the locals, has plenty of iconic attractions and fun things to do and see. Here are some of the favorites.

Independence National Historical Park

Independence National Historical Park stretches across several blocks of downtown Philadelphia. This park celebrates many buildings and significant events surrounding the birth of the nation. There are several sites to take in here.

Independence Hall is located in the park. This is the birthplace of both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. The building is one of this nation's 24 World Heritage sites.

Carpenters' Hall is where the First Continental Congress voted to support a trade embargo against Great Britain. Fervent and vocal American colonists fed the flames of independence.

The Liberty Bell is one of the largest attractions inside the park. The famous bell is a bronze gem with a notable fracture.

Philadelphia Museum of Art

The Philadelphia Museum of Art drew a great deal of attention when Sylvester Stallone ran up the long run of steps in the movie "Rocky." However, this cultural institution is even more impressive inside with a remarkable collection of fine art that includes works from the Italian Renaissance, impressionist paintings, and contemporary masterpieces.

Longwood Gardens

Longwood Gardens is a 1,100-acre park in the Kennett Square area of the city. It is a Mecca of stunning gardens, woodlands, meadows, and fountains. This horticultural center also hosts hundreds of events each year, including gardening demonstrations, educational programs, and concerts.

The Philadelphia Zoo

The Philadelphia Zoo boasts of the world's first system of see-through mesh trails that cross over pathways and connect habitats that encourage animals to more freely explore the grounds. This zoo offers a truly immersive experience into the animal kingdom. Some of the features are the Key Bank Big Cat Falls, PECO Primate Reserve, and the KidZooU wildlife academy.

Philly Cheesesteaks

You cannot leave the City of Brotherly Love without having a cheesesteak. There are battles over which cheesesteak sandwich is the best.

Pat's King of Steaks is coined the original home of the cheesesteak. It has been in operation since 1930. Just across the street is Geno's Steaks--a formidable contender for best cheesesteak in Philly. It is open 24 hours. Both are good.

For more great food, head to the Reading Terminal Market. This is one of the oldest active marketplaces for buying fresh foods and dining.
