Here are the top stories today in Philadelphia:
- Italian-Americans celebrated their heritage and culture on Sunday with a parade along south Broad Street, ending at Marconi Plaza. The Christopher Columbus statue in Marconi Plaza has been boxed up for the past two years as the City of Philadelphia deemed it offensive, however, city workers painted the box to look like the Italian flag with green, white, and red stripes. Mayor Jim Kenney's administration canceled the Columbus Day holiday and instead now recognizes the holiday as Indigenous Persons Day. (Billy Penn)
- Philadelphia 2, Cardinals 0. Both the Phillies and the Eagles defeated the St. Louis Cardinals and the Arizona Cardinals over the weekend. Philadelphians wake up this Monday morning with the Birds being the only undefeated team in the NFL thanks to a 20-17 win in Arizona, and the Phillies bring it home to Citizens Bank Park with a Tuesday, Oct. 11, game against Atlanta at 1:05 p.m. Plus, the Philadelphia Union kicks to a 4-0 record and is No. 1 in the East! Check out Kevin Kinkead's great takeaways from the games this weekend. (Crossing Broad)
- When you need something done in Philadelphia, you need to have Sharon Vaughn on speed dial. After decades of working behind the scenes in City Hall, the 42nd Democratic Ward Leader (and best fish fry fundraiser organizer in the city) gets her shot at a City Council seat. (inquirer.com)
