Here are the top three stories in Philadelphia today:
- With only a year left in his second term as mayor of Philadelphia, Jim Kenney says gun violence prevention is his top priority. Kenney reflected on the major challenges his office faced the past seven years, including gun violence and the COVID pandemic. "We have COVID under control," Kenney said. "We don't have the violence under control yet." Kenney said enhancing public safety will be his administration's number one priority for 2023. (NBC 10 Philadelphia)
- For the first time in a dozen years, the Philadelphia Housing Authority is opening up its waiting list to help thousands find affordable places to live while providing incentives to landlords. The city was able to reopen the waiting list after it helped about 55,000 eligible people find affordable housing over the last twelve years. It will open for a two-week period beginning on Jan. 23 through Feb. 5 and applicants must apply online. (fox29.com)
- Following a crew of teachers making the most of what they have at an underfunded Philadelphia public school, "Abbott Elementary" was the big winner at the 2023 Golden Globe Awards. The ABC series, the top nominee of the night with five total nods, was awarded Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy at the 80th annual Golden Globes. (msn.com)
