Local Veteran Honored Nationally for #StillServing

Swedesboro veteran Matt Cahill is being honored for dedication to country and community in the VFW #StillServing campaign. The national Veterans of Foreign Wars #StillServing campaign shines a spotlight on veterans who continue to serve in their community after the military.
A 26-year U.S. Army medic who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Cahill founded Veteran Equine Therapy Specialists (VETS) and Green Star Families of America, both aimed at fighting veteran suicide.
Upon his return from Kuwait in 2007, Cahill experienced severe PTSD and wanted to end his life. He tried traditional therapy, to no avail. While working with horses he noticed that he felt a peace and calm that 10 years of traditional therapy couldn’t provide. He knew he had to try to help other veterans who were struggling so he founded Veteran Equine Therapy Specialists (VETS) which combines traditional and equine therapies, specifically for veterans.

In addition, Cahill founded Green Star Families of America, a nonprofit that provides assistance to families who have lost a veteran to suicide and has lobbied to get a current bill before Congress, HR 5036, that will give surviving families federal designation as “Green Star Families” and entitlements to receive behavioral healthcare.
