Mark Gerardot on How To Communicate Efficiently As A Leader

Mark Gerardot talks about what you need to do to communicate with your team effectively.

Communication is a crucial aspect of being a leader. With effective communication skills, you share your vision and ideas correctly without misinformation being passed along. When you don’t take the time to perfect your skills, your team can be bogged down by inaccurate data or confusion. Instead of receiving a finished product, you’ll get an erroneous project or even resignation letters.

Use Proper Body Language

When you’re speaking with another person, pay attention to what your body instinctively does. Do you start to fidget, are you hunched over, or even darting your eyes when they are talking? If you do any of these actions, you show the speaker that they aren’t getting your full attention. Instead, you give them the impression that what they are communicating doesn’t matter.

If you want to communicate effectively, ensure that your body language isn’t giving off the wrong signals. Turn your body to the person you are speaking with, maintain direct eye contact and when they talk nod in agreement. When you follow these basic rule, you will find yourself with a more engaged team. They won’t feel like they are being ignored and will more readily participate in conversations with you.

Learn To Listen

Communication has two parts to it: speaking and listening. To be effective at communication, you need to master both aspects. You have to let the other person finish speaking without interruption. When you do this, you will find that you are better able to answer their questions because you got the full picture.

When they are done speaking, take a moment to process their words before responding. If they asked you a question, repeat it back to them. You give them the chance to correct you if you misunderstood them and give yourself a second to think of an answer.

Create An Open Atmosphere

When the culture and environment are inclusive and receptive to new ideas, your employees understand that they can speak their minds. Your team knows they can then come to you with creative solutions or speak up when they don’t agree with a point that you made. It gives the office the opportunity to have real conversations, with genuine opinions and insight. Ensure that your team understands that they can go to you with issues or ideas.

Communication is a vital part of being a leader. Without it, your team suffers from misdirection and confusion. When you take the time and effort to be an effective communicator, your team will flourish.
