Here are the top three stories today in Philadelphia:

  1. Mary Gallagher, 87, has already won 2023. It happened just after the clock struck midnight on Sunday in Port Richmond when she was on her front stoop, ringing in the New Year with her bell, when she felt a sharp pain on her shoulder and started to cry. She took off her sweater and then made the startling discovery — a bullet fell to the ground. She was hit with celebratory gunfire and had to get stitches. Police reported it was one of two celebratory gunfire incidents on New Years' Eve. (6abc Philadelphia)
  2. Now that's a happy New Year - one lucky lottery winner is heading into 2023 with a $2 million check! A Powerball with Power Play ticket worth $2 million was sold at Porter Beverage on Porter Street in South Philadelphia on New Year's Eve. Drinks are on them! (fox29.com)
  3. A familiar name may be joining the crowded field vying to be Philadelphia's next mayor.
Sources close to former Mayor Michael Nutter have confirmed to WHYY News that he's been asked to consider running for a third term as mayor. The city charter limits mayors to two consecutive terms in office, but it doesn't prevent a former mayor from running for a third term after taking a term off. (WHYY)
