Offensive Locker Room Signs Cancel Penn Women's Volleyball Season

The school said signs found earlier this week in the locker room were vulgar, offensive, and disrespectful and thus canceled the season.

PHILADELPHIA — The women's volleyball season at University of Pennsylvania has been canceled due to offensive signs found in the team's locker room, according to the school.

Officials said on the Penn Athletics website that the remainder of the women's volleyball team season has been cancelled, effective immediately.

The move comes after officials found vulgar, offensive, and disrespectful posters in the women's volleyball locker room earlier this week, the school said.

That means the team will miss its last two matches for the season. There were scheduled for Friday at Yale and Saturday at Brown.

The school said the signs were in violation of team and Divisional policy and the incident has been referred to the school's administration for review.

"The behavior exhibited by our women's volleyball student-athletes is simply unacceptable and will not be tolerated," the T. Gibbs Kane, Jr. W'69 Director of Athletics and Recreation Dr. M. Grace Calhoun said. "We expect our student-athletes to represent the University of Pennsylvania in a first-class and respectful manner at all times, and in this case, our women's volleyball student-athletes did not meet that standard. We have reviewed the matter with the appropriate University partners and will determine additional steps in the coming days and weeks."

The school did not say what content was on the signs.
