Philadelphia Oil Refinery Fire Out, Investigation Underway

Officials said the fire has been put out and the leaking gas valve has been shut after the explosion and fire Friday morning.

PHILADELPHIA — After an early morning explosion and subsequent blaze, the fire at the Philadelphia Energy Solutions refinery is out and the investigation is underway, officials said.

Officials with the Philadelphia Fire Department and the Office of Emergency Management said the fire was put out Saturday afternoon and the gas valve that was leaking a butane-propane gas mixture was shut off.

Additionally, the tank involved in the explosion and fire has been isolated.

The Fire Department's hazmat unit and the city's Department of Public Health are monitoring the air quality around the refinery.

Officials said the cause and origin of the fire are being investigated now by agencies including the Occupational Safety and Health Administration; Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives; the U.S. Chemical Safety and Hazard Investigation Board; and the PFD Fire Marshal’s Office.
