Philly Cop Charged With Assault To Be Fired

Officer Joseph Marion is alleged to have punched a man in the mouth, dropping his gun which was then picked up by a child, authorities said.

PHILADELPHIA — A Philadelphia Police officer has been charged with assault and related crimes after getting into a fight and dropping his gun during the fight, authorities said.

Police Officer Joseph Marion was arrested by the Philadelphia Police Department’s Internal Affairs Division on Oct. 20 after to an investigation into an assault that occurred on Sunday, April 18.

During a physical altercation that date, Marion punched a male in the mouth with a closed fist, police said.

After a struggle ensued between Marion and the complainant, Marion’s gun fell to the ground and was retrieved by a child that was on location at the time of the incident, police said.

Marion did not point his weapon at the complainant, nor did he threaten the complainant with the firearm during the incident, according to police.

The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office has charged Marion with simple assault, recklessly endangering another person, and disorderly conduct.

Marion is a 9-year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department and was last assigned to the 22nd District.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw has suspended Marion for 30 days with the intent to dismiss at the end of the 30 days.
