Here are the top three stories in Philadelphia today:

  1. The Kimmel Cultural Campus cut off its relationship with Philly Pops on Friday afternoon after warning the ensemble that it must pay its $520,000 debt or face eviction. All upcoming Philly Pops performances have been suspended while the group restructures its business model and gains financial security. Philly Pops spokesperson Annie Meiko said the ensemble was "incredibly disappointed" by the Philadelphia Orchestra and Kimmel Center's decision to evict it. ( PhillyVoice)
  2. Jerry Blavat, the legendary disc jockey known as "The Geator with the Heater" and "The Boss with the Hot Sauce" has died. Blavat, a Philly icon was a fast-talking DJ in Philadelphia who was a staunch backer of R&B in an era where "race records" weren't mainstream, died Friday at Jefferson-Methodist Hospital in Philadelphia. The cause of death was from complications caused by myasthenia gravis, an autoimmune neuromuscular disease. He worked up until recently, when he canceled several long-running live events. (yahoo.com)
  3. After the beatdown of the New York Giants on Saturday night, the Philadelphia Eagles will play for the NFC East Championship Game against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, January 29 at 3 PM. Tickets for the big game will go on sale online at Ticketmaster Tuesday, January 24 at 10 AM ET. However, 3rd party markets are already marking up these hot tickets with a rumored high of $10,000 for lower-level seats to watch the Eagles go to the Super Bowl or schedule their golf tee times. • Everybody clap your hands, clap your hands! The death of Philly DJ Jerry Blavat deserves so much more than just a headline and a story link. This guy was Philly. He made young and old want to dance and he played black artists on his radio broadcast while other DJ's played the "whitewashed" versions. Maybe that's one of the reasons that Dionne Warwick is doing his eulogy. Here's to Jerry Blavat, a true Philadelphia original (timesherald).
