Philly Solar Panel Initiative Encourages Homeowners To Go Green

"Solarize Philly" will help homeowners install solar panels for reduced costs.

PHILADELPHIA – Philadelphia homeowners who want to take the solar plunge will now have more reason to invest in the cost-saving, and environmentally-friendly energy source. The Philadelphia Energy Authority (PEA) is launching "Solarize Philly" this summer, which will help those looking to use solar panels do so at a low cost.

"Solarize campaigns allow a group of homeowners to install solar together at a reduced price," according to the campaigns' website. "The more households moving forward, the lower the cost for all participants."

Interested homeowners can register up for the program from July 1 through September 30.

To implement the program, the PEA will partner with select solar companies to offer reduced-cost rootop solar panels.

"PEA will help the developers keep the costs low by bundling neighborhood installations, reducing marketing and outreach costs, and working with the Office of Sustainability, L&I and PECO to keep the process moving as quickly as possible," the website reads. "We will also work with developers and lenders to provide financing when needed."

This program will not only help homeowners who install the panels, but others around the city as well, as it will help fund solar training in Philly schools and help reduce solar cost for lower-income residents, according to the program website.
