(Patch Media)

Hello, friends. I'm back in your inbox this morning to walk you through all the most important things happening in Philadelphia today. In today's issue, we'll touch on...

  • A disturbing video shows a Philadelphia Parking Authority officer getting shot in the head on the streets of Frankford.
  • After six decades, the "Boy in the Box" mystery is solved.
  • You have until the end of today to claim your Homestead Tax Deduction!

But first, today's weather:

Mostly sunny; windy, cooler. High: 45 Low: 28.

Here are the top stories today in Philadelphia:

  1. It was social media and news outlets, not the Philadelphia Police that released security camera footage of a Philadelphia Parking Authority officer being followed and then shot in the head while he was walking his beat along Frankford Avenue. He collapsed to the ground after the gunfire as the shooter ran off. The victim, a 37-year-old man, was critically injured, police said. (phillypolice.com)
  2. On February 25, 1957, a boy between the ages of 3 and 7, was found dead, naked and severely beaten in a cardboard box on the side of Susquehanna Road in Philadelphia's Fox Chase neighborhood. The child was unidentified for decades and was known as "the Boy in the Box." Now, over 60 years later, Philadelphia Police announced through DNA testing, they have the child's identity and birth certificate. (NBC 10 Philadelphia)
  3. The clock is ticking for Philadelphia homeowners to take advantage of the city's revamped Homestead Exemption program. So many Philadelphians miss out on this property tax deduction because they do not apply for this waiver! The state-set deadline to apply is today, Thursday, December 1! Applications can be submitted online, by phone or by mail. The application must be postmarked by Dec. 1. This enables residents to deduct $80,000 from their property value before paying their property taxes. (WHYY)

The city's Office of Arts, Culture and the Creative Economy (OACCE) and the African American Historic Statue Advisory Committee will accept bids for the statue design until Jan. 26. It will be the first statue of an African American historic female figure in the city's public art collection and the budget is $500,000. ( WHYY)
  • Hey, remember that massive hole at 8th and Market Streets in the 1990s? Yep, the Walt Disney Company was posed to develop an indoor amusement park there called DisneyQuest. That was just some of the huge projects that never happened. Here's a good writeup of all the big things that never prospered here in Philly- DisneyQuest, TrumpStreet and Will Smith's Silver City Studios: The Philly that might have been! ( lancasteronline.com)
