Shades for Migraine Sparks Conversation and Connection in Philly
Global awareness #ShadesForMigraine campaign brings visibility to migraine disease at the Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run
Philadelphia, PA (May 7, 2025) – The global awareness campaign Shades for Migraine drew strong community interest and sparked meaningful conversations with attendees of the Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run Health & Wellness Expo.
The campaign, spearheaded by the non-profit Association of Migraine Disorders, connected with thousands of people—many of whom were eager to share their experiences and learn more about migraine disease.
“Shades for Migraine was thrilled to connect with so many community members and families at the Health & Wellness Expo—sharing information about migraine disease and handing out our signature purple sunglasses to help raise awareness in style,” said Sara Berkowitz, Shades for Migraine Program Manager. “We were inspired by the number of thoughtful, informed questions we received. People were genuinely appreciative of the effort to raise awareness.”

Migraine Disease and its Symptoms Can Be Disabling
Migraine is the second-leading cause of disability worldwide. While migraine attacks can include a severe headache, other symptoms can include light sensitivity, dizziness, vomiting, sinus pain, cognitive impairment, and vision loss —symptoms can even mimic a stroke.

The true impact of migraine is often misunderstood thanks to stigma, which is a key reason Shades for Migraine continues outreach efforts. The signature purple shades are a symbol for migraine awareness, as many living with migraine deal with light sensitivity.
Show Your Support for the Millions Living with Migraine
People in Philadelphia are joining others around the world in the #ShadesForMigraine challenge. Since 2017, people from more than 40 countries have participated by showing their support for those living with migraine. Participating is easy – just snap a photo in sunglasses and share to social media with #ShadesForMigriane.
“Being on disability (due to migraine) can feel hopeless sometimes,” said Liz Carroll. “Shades for Migraine gives me renewed purpose and I am so proud to be part of the migraine community.”
