Here are the top three stories today in Philadelphia:
- Somebody in South Philly is $5 million bucks richer! Pennsylvania Lottery officials said a $5 million-winning Five Million Fabulous Fortune Scratch-Off ticket was sold at a South Philly 7-Eleven. The store, located at 2301 West Passyunk Ave., gets a $10,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket. (Philadelphia, PA Patch)
- Alcohol is now more expensive in Pennsylvania and the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board cites inflation as the cause. January 15 marks the first day of liquor and wine price increases about 4% for state-owned stores across Pennsylvania. This is the first time since 2019 that liquor and wine prices have gone up in Pennsylvania. (WPVI-TV)
- Oh! Another mayoral candidate? Republican David Oh said he is 'leaning towards' joining crowded contest of Democrats for Philly mayor as soon as next month. "I am leaning towards running for mayor. I've been exploring for a couple of months," Oh said Friday morning. The lone GOP at-large council member said he wants to provide a viable alternative for the winner of the Democratic contest, since many will have voted for someone other than the nominee. - Singing for Busy Adults FREE Intro Class (6:00 PM)
From my notebook:
- Murder @ The Curtis Building: Six times a week, every week, you can expect someone to be murdered inside the Curtis building on Washington Square. Often it will be the same person, over and over again. Philadelphia now has a permanent venue for murder mystery theater, the Red Rūm, operated by Without a Clue Productions, an interactive theater company that has been killing off its cast for twenty years. - Small Crime in a Big City: It happens in Philly every day — small crimes like muggings, bike thefts and having your catalytic converter cut off your vehicle. Columnist Christine Flowers writes a first-hand piece on why when she got mugged in Center City, she didn't bother calling the police in a lawless city. (The Delaware County Daily Times)
- The Philly Airport was a zoo! And you should've seen the line for baggage! Philadelphia International Airport can be a zoo at times, but an ongoing program hopes to ease travelers' stress by turning part of the airport concourse into an actual zoo. The Philadelphia Zoo's Dani Hogan says at least once a month exotic animals from the zoo are on display on the concourse between terminals B and C to give travelers something to enjoy while they are waiting for their planes.
