🌱 Swift Kick In The Wallet + Red Cup Day = No Coffee + PA House Blues

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Philadelphia.

(Patch Media)

Good morning, hello! I'm back with your new edition of the Philadelphia Daily, fresh off the presses. Here's what you need to know about what's happening in town. Today's issue includes:

  • Ticketmaster cancels public sale for Taylor Swift's Eras Tour due to insufficient ticket inventory, chaos is an understatement.
  • Starbucks coffee customers find stores closed on Red Cup Day due to striking workers.
  • Democrats win control of Pennsylvania state House after picking up 12 seats.

But first, today's weather:

Breezy with clouds and sun. High: 45 Low: 29.

Here are the top three stories today in Philadelphia:

  1. Maybe Taylor Swift will write a song about this messy situation. Ticketmaster said on Thursday that "due to extraordinarily high demands on ticketing systems and insufficient remaining ticket inventory to meet that demand, Friday's public on-sale for Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour has been cancelled. The sudden cancellation comes after Ticketmaster sold over 2 million tickets- the most ever sold for an artist in a single day. It caused a near meltdown of its website. Fans, known as "Swifties" are not happy and epic breakdowns are already all over social media. Already, third party ticket resellers have listed Swift's tickets for $13,000 each.(yahoo.com)
  2. Starbucks workers at more than 100 U.S. stores including Philadelphia went on strike Thursday in the largest labor action since a campaign to unionize the company's stores began late last year. The walkouts coincide with Starbucks' annual Red Cup Day, when the company gives free reusable cups to customers who order a holiday drink. Workers say it's often one of the busiest days of the year. and that is why they chose this day to picket and highlight their workplace concerns and problems. (6abc.com)
  3. Democrats have won control of the Pennsylvania state House for the first time in more than a decade. State Rep. Todd Stephens (R., Montgomery) conceded his race in the 151st District on Thursday. Democrats are expected to nominate their floor leader Joanna McClinton (D., Philadelphia) for speaker of the state House. She'd be the first woman and second Black legislator to hold the gavel. From my notebook:

  • Will someone please do a true crime podcast on this mind-boggling case? On Jan. 26, 2011, Ellen Rae Greenberg was found on the kitchen floor of her Philadelphia apartment with 20 stab wounds — 10 to the back of her neck alone. And yet, the medical examiner ruled her death a homicide and later changed the ruling to suicide. Her family, friends and law enforcement allies want the ruling overturned and a new investigation reopened. (Daily Voice)
  • "Caring for Friends was founded in 1974," says Vince Schiavone, who now serves as Chairman and CEO. "Mom started it in our kitchen." His mom, Rita went to visit a neighbor and found that her cupboard was bare. Today, over 10,000 volunteers provide meals for homebound seniors, the disabled and military veterans. Channel 6abc has this great showcase on the organization. (WPVI-TV)
  • If you think Die Hard is the best Christmas movie then come have a drink at one of these Philly watering holes that are getting their Clark W. Griswold on and decking the halls and serving more than just store bought eggnog. (Philadelphia magazine)
