Viaduct Work Affecting I-76 West Traffic Through Aug 31

Viaduct work will affect traffic on a portion of westbound Interstate 76 west this weekend, next week, and next weekend, PennDOT said.

PHILADELPHIA — Work on a viaduct in Philadelphia will affect travel on westbound Interstate 76 through Aug. 31, according to PennDOT.

Westbound I-76 is closing this weekend and next weekend. The highway will also be limited to one lane in the afternoon and overnight next week.

PennDOT said crews will be rehabilitating and repaving the viaduct between University Avenue and 30th Street in Center City Philadelphia.

The work schedule and locations are:

  • Friday, Aug. 21, from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m., westbound I-76 will be reduced to one lane, then closed completely and detoured from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 24, between the University Avenue and 30th Street interchanges. The westbound University Avenue and Vare Avenue on-ramps will be closed. The westbound South Street on- and off-ramps will remain open until 7 p.m. Friday, then closed for the weekend shutdown of westbound I-76;
  • Monday, Aug. 24, through Thursday, Aug. 27, from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m., westbound I-76 will be reduced to a single lane, then closed completely from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning between the University Avenue and 30th Street interchanges. The westbound University Avenue and Vare Avenue on-ramps will be closed. The westbound South Street on- and off-ramps will remain open until 7 p.m., then closed during the overnight shutdowns of westbound I-76; and
  • Friday, Aug. 28, from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m., westbound I-76 will be reduced to one lane, then closed completely and detoured from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31, between the University Avenue and 30th Street interchanges. The westbound University Avenue and Vare Avenue on-ramps will be closed. The westbound South Street on- and off-ramps will remain open until 7 p.m. Friday, then closed for the weekend shutdown of westbound I-76.

During this weekend’s and next week's closures, westbound I-76 through drivers coming from New Jersey will be directed to go north on Interstate 95, then west on I-676 to get to westbound I-76. Westbound local motorists will exit at University Avenue and follow the posted detours to the ramp to I-76 west.

Then, during next week’s daytime closure, the westbound off-ramps to 30th Street and Interstate 676 also will be closed. Drivers normally using these ramps will be detoured west on I-76 to exit at Montgomery Drive, then turn left and take the ramp to eastbound I-76 and the exits at 30th Street or I-676.

Drivers should use an alternate route or allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because significant backups and delays will occur.
